The world today is experiencing major changes unseen in a century. A new round of scientific and technological revolution and industrial transformation is accelerating with developing interdisciplinary integration.  Technological innovation has become the main battlefield of the international arena. Since the 14^th Five-Year Plan, China has actively promoted the construction of strategic backbone channels through building international comprehensive transportation hub clusters such as Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei, Yangtze River Delta, Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, Chengdu-Chongqing Economic Circle, etc. A number of large-scale bridges, tunnels, water conservancy, hydropower and urban transportation hub projects have been built or planned in difficult and complex environments such as mountains, rivers and seas, and riversides. The demand for engineering construction and operation safety is becoming increasingly urgent, and key technical challenges are becoming increasingly prominent.
 
The Chinese Academy of Engineering actively plays a leading role in academic research, and regularly invites academicians and relevant experts to conduct strategic and forward-looking academic seminars around the cutting-edge issues concerning engineering science and technology development and key issues of national and local economic and social development. Against this backdrop, Chinese Academy of Engineering Symposium on Engineering Science and Technology, the 12th International Bridge and Tunnel Technology Conference(IBTC 2024) is scheduled to be held in Shanghai from June 15 to 17, 2024.
 
The conference this year will focus on difficult and complex mountainous bridges and tunnels, long sea-crossing passages and large-scale comprehensive underground hubs in cities, and in-depth study of key common technical problems in the construction and operation and maintenance of major transportation infrastructure in extreme environments. In addition to this, topics as disaster resilience development needs, basic theoretical research and cutting-edge scientific and technological innovation will be included. Through the event, we sincerely hope to foster cutting-edge basic independent innovation in the field, promote the implementation of major projects, and accelerate the building a scientific and technological power and a transportation power. Therefore, we do our part in accelerating the formation of new quality productive forces.
